Saphir Gas Turbine
Microturbo Saphir 007 Air Producer Mounted in Stand
The Microturbo Saphir 007 APU is used for starting the Jaguar Aircraft (2 x Adour Turbofans)
The Microturbo Saphir gas tubine, a very neat little unit which is built in france. The Saphir started life in the 1960s and is still in use today. A number of versions were developed and it is also related to the twin shaft unit the Microturbo Noelle gas turbine starter. The Saphir is fitted to a number of different aircraft and is used to provide mechanical power and pneumatic power. This unit is sometimes refered to as an "Air Generator" or "Air Producer".

The Saphir in common with a number of other Microturb units, adopts the use of an external electric pump to supply fuel and oil, this unsual arrangenment simplifies the design of the engine. Only the starter is mechanically coupled to the engine.

Microturbo 007 Air Producer Electronics and ECU mounted in RH enclosure (Jaguar 007 Version)
Enclosure containing relays and ECU wiring
Electronic ECU (Speed Regulator) unit taken from Jaguar aircraft. This unit controls acceleration,
starter, governed speed and protects against overspeed.
Microturbo electronic control unit. This is an analogue control unit which is at the heart of the APU fuel control system. The unit accepts an rpm signal
which is derived from a reluctance speed probe built into the starter motor. When the engine is started a speed signal developes which is used by the
ECU to provide the following functions-

1. Overspeed and underspeed relay outputs fail if no speed signal developes.
2. Underspeed and overspeed relay outputs hold-in relays during normal operation.
3. Underspeed relay output opens at 70% to cancel start cycle.
4. Start cycle cancelled if engine fails to reach 30% inside approx 10 seconds.
5. Accelerates and governs engine at 87% stand by idle condition. The module
supplies a regulating electrical signal to a special servo spill valve
inserted in to the fuel burner manifold return line.
6. Accelerates engine to 100% condition for air supply function. (main engine start)
7. Shuts down engine if 110% rpm is exceeded (overspeed protection).
