Noel Penny Turbines 100 Series Gas Generator
The Noel Penny Turbines (NPT) 100 series engine was developed from the Budworth Puffin. NPT took over Budworth in the 1970s and went on to produce the 300 and 400 series engines. Noel Penny was one of the designers at Rover Gas Turbines and worked on the Car Projects including the Lemans Rover BRM car. The 300 series engine was produced for the propulsion of Target Drones and Missiles and is similar in many respects to the Microturbo TRS18 unit. The 300 series engine was also fitted to a remarkable small executive jet called the Leopard. This four seater aircraft was fitted with two tail mounted 300 engines. The fuel efficiency of small pure jet engines was poor and so the aircraft was later fitted with Williams Turbofan engines.

The 100 series engine was used as a turbo jet and as the gas generator for a turboshaft unit. A novel application for the NPT100 was a heavey lift transport vehicle. Four NPT109 engines were used to drive compressors which inflated a hovercraft skirt. The skirt was attatched to a transporter vehicle, the skirt was inflated when the ground load needed to be reduced, for instance when weak bridges were to be crossed.

It is beleived that Noel Penny Turbines stopped trading in the late 1980's.
