| Another stationary gas turbine which was built by a car company, the BMW 6012 can be considered to be the German equivalent of the Rover 1S60 and indeed it has a similar specification. Several variations of this model were produced and used as APUs in aircraft, ground power units and a jet version was also made. The most interesting application of the 6012 was a small single seat helicopter built by Dornier. The gas turbine was used to drive a compressor which provided air for rotor tip propulsion. The air intake to this compressor featured a valve which controlled the air delivery and also "Stalled" the compressor during the starting of the gas turbine.
The manufacture of this engine was taken over by Man-Turbo Union (MTU) in 1966, MTU are now part of the Daimler Crysler Aerospace Group. |

| The British aircraft electrical equipment company Rotax built the 6012 into a ground power unit. A hand started 6012 engine was used to drive a 500A generator for Helicopter "Jump Starting". The GPU was built as a lightweight unit which was classed as "Air Transportable".
A similar GPU was built by Hans Still GmbH and featured a 900A 28V generator. |
